It’s the final push to win a flight and qualify for Friday’s playoff at the Resort Course at Grande Dunes, and these golfers at Azalea Sands Golf Club are not only primed and ready to go for it but having a great time in the pursuit! “The Big Timer” is here to chat them up, and get these golfers’ thoughts on what has made the 38th Annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship so special for them.
Charlie Rymer:
Well, how many times have you played in the World Am?
Brian Manseau:
This is my fourth. I didn’t play last year, but I played the two previous years and then it was 10 years prior to that.
Charlie Rymer:
What’s your best finish?
Brian Manseau:
Usually mid-pack. I usually collapse on the last day. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen today.
Charlie Rymer:
You don’t look like you’re going to be upset if it does.
Brian Manseau:
No, it’s just golf. My name’s not on my bag, like other people. So I got to go get to work on Monday.
Charlie Rymer:
Now, do you come here for the competition, the camaraderie, or for both?
Brian Manseau:
I come here to meet people. It’s just golf to me. I don’t think of it any other way. If I shoot a 10, I don’t change my demeanor, whether I shoot a three and I just enjoy playing with other people.
Charlie Rymer:
In your experience here and some of those folks you’ve met, have you become friends with them and kept up with them outside of the World Am?
Brian Manseau:
Absolutely. The first time I played in it, 10 years ago, I played with three guys and we kept in touch. And when I went back, eight years later, I got paired with the same threesome. So it was really good.
Charlie Rymer:
Now what’s the key for you today? This is a final round here at Azalea Sands.
Brian Manseau:
I’m an aggressive player, and every time I try to play smart, I don’t. So I’m going to try to stay aggressive and hopefully it works out.
Charlie Rymer:
I like it. So if you go down, go down in flames.
Brian Manseau:
And it’ll always be a smile at the end.
Charlie Rymer:
I’m so excited. I’ve finally found somebody I could interview that’s going to make me look skinny. So Marty, how many times have you played in the World Am?
Marty Henson:
This would’ve been my eighth year, if I could do it continuously, but I’ve had two knees replaced in the last year, so I missed it, but it’s one of the best events I’ve ever played in.
Charlie Rymer:
What’s your best finish in those eight years?
Marty Henson:
I tied for fifth my first year.
Charlie Rymer:
And then you went downhill after that.
Marty Henson:
Yeah, and then it’s been a party.
Charlie Rymer:
What’s the part that needs to click for you to have a good round today?
Marty Henson:
Fairways, hit fairways. These roughs have been tough on me out here. I don’t hit the ball far, so I have to make sure that I hit it straight and get in the short grass, that kind of thing.
Charlie Rymer:
Now, did you come down here from Greenville? Did you bring a bunch of buddies with you? Or were your friends in Greenville happy just to get rid of you for the week?
Marty Henson:
Well, there’s a combination there probably, but we come down, the six of us come down every year and have a condo over here in Myrtle and it’s just a big social event and they’re playing in different things, but actually three of us are here today at this golf course.
Charlie Rymer:
Oh wow.
Marty Henson:
Yeah. [crosstalk 00:02:19]
Charlie Rymer:
That’s cool. There really is something cool about coming to Myrtle Beach and getting all your buddies. Y’all probably stay in a condo, right?
Marty Henson:
That’s right.
Charlie Rymer:
And you’re sort of staying together, having meals together, sort of a going over the day together, all that. I mean, it’s pretty special.
Marty Henson:
It’s a great time, it really is. It’s the camaraderie that we build by staying together and eating together and all that. But then also to hearing the stories about who they’ve played with during the day, and then going to the 19th Hole and meeting people from all over the world. It’s a unique event.
Charlie Rymer:
You guys don’t ever tell lies, do you?
Marty Henson:
Yeah you know, it was six inches.
Charlie Rymer:
That’s a long putt. I’m all finished with this. Do you know Hugh?
Marty Henson:
Hugh Damn Right!
Charlie Rymer:
So tell me Christian, how many World Ams is this for you?
Christian Alderucci:
My first one.
Charlie Rymer:
Oh, wow. So what are your impressions of the week?
Christian Alderucci:
I love it. Yeah, I love it. They do a great job here, having a lot of fun. My buddies used to always come up here and they’re here, so they finally got me to come up.
Charlie Rymer:
Down.
Christian Alderucci:
Down.
Charlie Rymer:
See, from Maryland, you got to drive north to get into Maryland. So I’m just trying to help a little bit. [crosstalk 00:03:29] I hope the golf game has been going a little better than the geography this week. How have you played?
Christian Alderucci:
I’ve been playing pretty good. I shot a couple of 80s and then I shot 79 yesterday. I had a $1,600 Skin yesterday.
Charlie Rymer:
I was going to ask you about that, but you just had to throw it right in. You know, the IRS is watching.
Christian Alderucci:
I hope not. And I hope my wife’s not watching either.
Charlie Rymer:
Yeah, did you get it in small unmarked bills?
Christian Alderucci:
Yeah, just a bunch of hundreds. And I went, “Okay, what am I going to do with this now?”
Charlie Rymer:
In terms of how you stand this weekend in your flight, headed to the final round, is it competitive?
Christian Alderucci:
Yeah, oh yeah. I mean, I’m in 4.4 to 5.3 or something like that in the 50 to 59. I’m in 20th, probably about 10 strokes off, but it’s very competitive.
Charlie Rymer:
What’s your game plan for today, the final round here at Azalea Sands?
Christian Alderucci:
Oh, I got to shoot low obviously, but for me more importantly, I’m going to go after another skin, you know, because money’s money.
Charlie Rymer:
I got it. So how do you go after a skin? Is it trying to make an eagle or what? I mean, when you say I’m going to go after a skin, how do you alter your game plan to do that?
Christian Alderucci:
You start firing at pins instead of firing at the center of the green. So, you try to bomb it and go for everything that you can.
Charlie Rymer:
That sounds like fun. I might just take the rest of the day off, come play golf with you.
Christian Alderucci:
Come on brother.
Charlie Rymer:
We’ll try to make some skins. Christian, thank you.
Christian Alderucci:
You’re always welcome man.
Charlie Rymer:
Thank you for your time and I hope you’ve enjoyed your first World Am. And I hope we see you coming back here every year.
Christian Alderucci:
I’ll definitely be back. Absolutely.
