More than 144,000 golf course reviewers have weighed in during the past year, and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and TPC Myrtle Beach have been included in Golf Advisor’s “Best of 2018: Top 50 Golf Courses in the U.S.” rankings.
Caledonia came in at No. 33, while TPC Myrtle Beach entered the top 50 at No. 49. The rankings are based on reviews of public golf courses, and reflect a combination of their overall star-rating averages as well as those in six subcategories (value, conditions, layout, pace of play, friendliness and off-course amenities). Reviews from active Golf Advisor members, including its Local Golf Advisors, as well as merit badge and staff ratings, are weighted more heavily than those from inactive members.
For a golf course to be eligible for inclusion on Golf Advisor most recent “best of” lists, it must offer regular public access and have received at least 10 reviews in the past 12 months. Approximately 2,800 U.S. courses received enough reviews to be considered for the nationwide ranking.
Golf Advisor’s U.S. Top 50 is highlighted by The Black Course at Bethpage State Park at No. 1, host of multiple PGA TOUR major championships including two U.S. Opens and the 2019 PGA Championship; and the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass (No. 3), home of THE PLAYERS Championship in March.
Caledonia’s ranking inclusion is spotlighted by feedback from reviewer lcbgolfm (“The ambiance of this place is incredible. Southern oaks with the Spanish moss, the flowers, landscaping, etc. It’s like playing golf at a botanical garden.”), while Ontario Local Golf Advisor kfish64 said of TPC, “We’ve had TPC as a regular course in our week-long trip for 3 or 4 years now, and each year it is EASILY the best conditioned and most liked of the courses we play.”
Along with Caledonia and TPC Myrtle Beach, four additional Myrtle Beach-area designs have also made Golf Advisor’s “Best of 2018” rankings for South Carolina, based on 203 statewide courses reviewed and nearly 4,500 total reviews in the past year. The Grand Strand-area designs receiving the highest rankings include Caledonia (No. 2), TPC Myrtle Beach (No. 3), The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (No. 7), Barefoot Resort & Golf – The Dye Course (No. 18), Tidewater Golf Club (No. 22) and Prestwick Country Club (No. 24).
