Pinehurst’s Drew Viney and Bluffton’s Wint Phoo Aung Win Dustin Johnson World Junior Qualifiers

Pinehurst’s Drew Viney and Bluffton’s Wint Phoo Aung Win Dustin Johnson World Junior QualifiersBy virtue of their wins, both Viney and Aung earned a spot in the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, which will be played February 24-26, 2017 at TPC Myrtle Beach. Zachery Reuland of Rock Hill, S.C., shot an even par 72, one-stroke back of Viney, to earn a spot in the boys field. 

Viney, who started his round on the 10th hole, shot a one-under par 71 that was highlighted by an eagle on SouthCreek’s 16th. 

Reuland closed a round that featured dramatic swings with a flourish. The freshman birdied his first two holes of the day but proceeded to bogey six of seven holes during the middle of the round. He rallied to birdie three holes in a row on the back nine to secure second place. 

Aung shot a four-over 76, good for a two-stroke win over Bailey Davis of White Plains, Md.

Fifty-six players from six states, Canada and Spain competed in the qualifier.

The Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, a 54-hole college style event, will feature a 104-player field comprised of elite-level boys and girls from across the globe. Eight of the top 10 junior boys and 11 of the top 12 junior girls in South Carolina have committed to play in the tournament. 

With the support of Johnson, the fourth-ranked player in the world, the tournament will provide participants a PGA Tour-like experience, and the chance to test themselves against their peers from others part of America and the world. 

The Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship is being sponsored by Founders Group International, the Dustin Johnson Golf School, and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. 

Johnson’s involvement with the tournament reflects his long-time commitment to junior golf, particularly in South Carolina, where he grew into one of the world’s best players. Through the Dustin Johnson Foundation, which is headquartered in Myrtle Beach, Johnson has donated more than $250,000 to junior golf, sponsoring numerous events throughout the state and helping cover entry costs for kids who need financial assistance.
