I’m not gonna lie. I instinctively recoil and cringe at the mere sound of “New Year’s resolution.”
Every time. The term is as trite as it gets.
But I’m not above using it here as a shameless SEO and engagement play, and a segue to the three promises I’m making to myself while calling “The Golf Capital of the World” here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina my home.
1. Play more. Not just more, but with the people I care about the most. Doing anything for leisure enjoyment doesn’t mean much to me unless I can share the experience with others close to me, and that starts with my family. My sons are grown adults now, and life’s too short. I don’t want to have any regrets about not taking every opportunity to share quality time with them while we’re all still able (Plus, in my advancing age, I also get to turn the tables on them by playing from the shorter tees!).
I’m also making it a point to play courses I’ve seen and photographed so many times, but rarely (or in some cases, never) actually played. Tidewater and True Blue are at the top of my 2025 wish list, especially after finally crossing The Dunes Golf & Beach Club and Caledonia off said list in 2024. I don’t care that all these courses will reveal every possible weakness in my game. You can see the beauty in any golf course, no matter how many times you visit it. But until you actually tee it up there, you don’t get the true appreciation for how special an experience it can be.
2. Learn more. Whether you live locally or are in town long enough to get a fresh perspective on sharpening your swing, we’ve got several top-level golf instruction options for you to include as part of your Myrtle Beach golfing plans or trip itinerary. After way too many years of silently trying to convince myself that my game can improve just by playing more, I finally relented in 2024 and got some sorely needed lessons. They’re still very much needed for me in 2025, and if you haven’t availed yourself of this learning resource, you’ll be amazed at how much the independent perspective of a certified instructor can work wonders for your skills, confidence, and ultimate enjoyment of the game.
3. Watch more. I’ll be watching the game with intent this year, not just the Myrtle Beach Classic and other PGA TOUR events on the 2025 schedule but at all levels. For me, that starts in early March with the 10th Annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship Presented by LA Golf. This collection of the game’s leading young players competes each year at TPC Myrtle Beach, the tournament-tested venue that has already been a launching pad for many of the game’s brightest young stars including the PGA TOUR’s Akshay Bhatia and Nick Dunlap, LPGA Tour’s Alexa Pano and LIV Golf’s Caleb Surratt. Other recent DJ World Junior alums are knocking at the professional door, including the world’s top three men’s amateurs (Luke Clanton, Jackson Koivun and Ben James) and top-10 women’s amateur Anna Davis.
I’m sure you’ve got plenty of priorities for your 2025 golfing wish list. What are they? We’d love to know! Our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube are great places to share those thoughts, and show the world how you’re making good on those promises to yourself in real time.
I look forward to seeing you out there in 2025!
