May 18, 2012

A Myrtle Beach golf trip offers the opportunity to eat a lot of great Mexican foodLooking for something with a little kick after chasing the little white ball around on your next Myrtle Beach golf trip?

Whether you want to spice it up for lunch and dinner or chill out with frozen margaritas, Myrtle Beach has your taste buds covered if its Mexican fare you crave.

The typical momasita-and-pop shops can be found up and down the Strand, but a handful of cantina stand out above the crowd for featuring creative dishes and an extra slice of nightlife. Here's our top five:

1) Abuelo's: With the literal translation of “Grandfather,” this Coastal Grande Mall restaurant is the granddaddy of local Mexican food.

Everything at Abuelo's is good, from the favorites you find on every Mexican menu to some unique specials you've never heard of before. The ingredients are fresh and top notch and the atmosphere is relaxed and casual.

2) Nacho Hippo: This new eatery has quickly gained a strong following among locals and visitors for offering great food and excellent atmosphere.

Designed to recreate a Cozumel cantina in both appetite and attitude, the Hippo has become the place to chill on the south side of Myrtle Beach. The live music and $3 margaritas have a little something to do with that.

But the food is what it's all about, and the Hippo turns hungry Myrtle Beach golfers into satisfied ones. Try the Hippo Egg Rolls or the Oh #@! Nachos, if you dare.

3) Fiesta Del Burro Loco: This Tex-Mex restaurant has been throwing one big party for the past 15 years and counting.

Serving all the traditional favorites in a festive atmosphere, Fiesta Del Burro Loco has become a renowned hot spot folks on a Myrtle Beach golf trip.

4) La Hacienda: Located in Pawleys Island, this casual indoor/outdoor eatery is a breath of fresh air.

The covered patio deck is the most coveted seat in the house, featuring a bar in the middle and throngs of locals and visitors surrounding it for frozen drinks on a hot summer day.

5) Fiesta Mexicana: Featuring daily lunch specials in the $6 range (the fish tacos are a popular Friday offering) and dinner for not much more, Fiesta Mexicana has good food and doubles as a dance club on late-night weekends (it even has the disco ball to prove it).
