Family Fun At Heron Point

March 8, 2012

Heron Point is a Myrtle Beach golf courseHeron Point Golf Club is all about a family-friendly Myrtle Beach golf vacation.

It’s extremely affordable – Heron Point is a past recipient of a “Best Bang for Your Buck’’ accolade presented by “Golf Magazine.” It’s not an overly complicated layout. From the championship markers the course offers a player-friendly 70.9 rating and 129 slope. And it’s a course that underwent a well-received facelift.

Heron Point is located near the center of fun offered on a Myrtle Beach golf trip. Families that golf together at Heron Point don’t have to rush to watch the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A affiliate of the American League champion Texas Rangers or go to the beach to catch afternoon waves and a relaxing sunset.

East Coast Golf Management recently took the reins at Heron Point and emphasized the quality of the course and value it can offer. Willard Byrd’s layout is mostly straightforward … with the exception of a few holes, including the 90-degree dogleg right, par-4 15th where legend has it John Daly once drove the green with a 3-wood.

The 6,477-yard par-72 course has its fair share of intricacy from the championship markers, but most obstacles are greatly reduced from the 5,300-yard gold markers and 4,700-yard women’s tees.

A majority of holes are in a straight line from tee to green. Many of the alleyways are guarded by tall pines or lengthy water hazards like the never-ending one decorating the entire left side of the 511-yard par-5 home hole.

Similar to the 18th, several Heron Point holes are scenic because of freshwater ponds dominating the panoramic views. The 179-yard, par-3 11th fits the description with sparkling water on the left; and so do the 175-yard, par-3 No. 6 with water and a massive bunker protecting the green; and the 546-yard, par-5 No. 9 with a huge pond that comes into play on the right-hand side.
