There has been significant reinvestment made in many Myrtle Beach’s golf courses in recent years, with the most prominent layouts attracting much of the attention (here’s looking at you, Grande Dunes).
But the commitment to improving area courses extends across the spectrum. Matter of fact, a trio of the Grand Strand’s “Golden Oldies” has undergone renovations, guaranteeing they do their part to ensure Myrtle Beach continues to deliver golf’s most value-laden trip. If you are looking to play a layout with a lot of character and a recent facelift, you need to check out Azalea Sands Golf Club, the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina, and Wedgefield Country Club.
Located in the heart of North Myrtle Beach, Azalea Sands has completely renovated its clubhouse, adding modern amenities, including a new dining room, while maintaining its classic charm. Azalea has also invested in course maintenance, improving conditions from tee to green. The Gene Hamm design has long provided golfers with a convenient location and the opportunity to score, and it’s better than ever.
The Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University is enjoying an $11 million upgrade, including the construction of a new 16,000 square foot clubhouse that will double as an academic learning center for the school’s professional golf management program. As part of the project, the par-4 9th hole was redesigned, and the driving range and tee boxes are being renovated. The 9th hole has been shortened to 350 yards to make room for the new clubhouse while offering players a chance at birdie.
New ownership has brought new life to Wedgefield. In addition to upgrading the layout, which plays along the Black River, Wedgefield has cabin accommodations, allowing golfers to stay-and-play on site while the Brick House Pub is an ideal spot for a post-round meal and drinks. The Porter Gibson layout is a hidden gem, offering a solid design and memorable views.
Azalea, Hackler and Wedgefield are each more than 50 years old, but this trio, thanks to a few nips and tucks in recent years, continues to deliver a good time for golfers.
