Here are five things you need to know before teeing it up at Parkland:
1. Doak’s Delight: Tom Doak, who has emerged as one of golf’s best course architects, cut his teeth at Legends. In addition to designing the Heathland Course, Doak masterminded Parkland, providing the game with a look at one of its young masters at work. Doak wasn’t the only big name to work at Parkland. The late Mike Strantz, who went on design Caledonia and True Blue, was responsible for the bunkering at Parkland.
2. Step Up Your Game: By reputation, Moorland, which was ranked among the 50 hardest courses in the country by Golf Digest, is the toughest course at Legends, but if you ask the pro shop staff and members, Parkland will get the nod. Be ready for a quality, but challenging round of golf.
3. Day at the Beach: There isn’t an abundance of water on Parkland, but those Strantz designed bunkers are plentiful. Parkland has more than 100 bunkers, including a couple cavernous ones around greens. Beware of the sand.
4. If You are Going to Succeed: The old saying goes you drive for show and putt for dough, but at Parkland, the driver is the most important club in the bag. The course isn’t overly long – 6,516 from the white tees, 6,099 from the greens, and 5,370 from the reds – but there is ample OB, so stray drives can mean penalty strokes. Hitting it straight off the tee also positions players to avoid the wrath of Parkland’s bunkers.
5. The Middle Ground Wins: Generally speaking the greens at Parkland are large with a lot of undulation. The opportunities for difficult pin placements are many, so don’t take the bait and go flag hunting. The middle of the green is your friend.
